Our summers here are painfully hot. The result is the fading of blooms and the loss of color amongst the highest of the summer sun. To counter this bleaching, I fill the gardens with burgundy flowers the color of a deep, red wine. Their depth is never lost to the sun and even when the shadows are shallow and the light is blinding, the burgundy dahlias and roses hold their form. Beauty under strain. I think there's a lesson there.
